Freebie Friday – Resources for High School Math

Algebra, geometry, calculus, oh my! For those of us who struggled with these math courses, the thought of teaching our high school kids math can make us break out in a cold sweat. Luckily for us, the internet provides loads of free help for these and other high school level math classes.

Traditional Course Resources

MathTV – You will find over 10,000 free math videos at this website covering topics for algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry as well as basic math and study skills. Once you select your topic, you can refine your search by sub-topic and/or teacher. If you scroll to the bottom of the home page there is a link to the old MathTV website which also provides access to math e-textbooks that can be read online and corresponding videos to every example in the textbook.

VirtualNerd – This site has over 1,500 video lessons for middle and high school math including pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, SAT and ACT math topics and more.

MathPlanet – Students can study pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, and geometry and sharpen SAT and ACT math skills with the free website sponsored by the Swedish non-profit organization, Mattecentrum with the lessons and videos provided.

Algebra2go – At this website supported by Saddleback College you will find algebra and calculus video lectures, worksheets, practice problems, quizzes, study guides, classroom notes and more.

PBS Learning Media – Mathematics – You will find videos, interactive lessons and games, lesson plans, and more for K-8 math as well as high school algebra, geometry and statistics and probability.

Non-Traditional Course Resources

Construction Center of Excellence – Construction Math Toolbox – In order to get this freebie, you will need to enter your name and email address, but once you do, a link to download the packet will appear. This packet for high school students includes 10 lesson plans, tests, teacher keys and supporting materials that teach important math concepts used in the construction industry and adhere to the College Readiness Standards.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute - Industrial Mathematics Project for High School Students – This page provides unique math-based projects centering around the industrial fields of crime and security, energy, finance, insurance, manufacturing, transportation and more.

Practical Uses of Math and Science (PUMAS) – PUMAS Examples – This collection, a majority of which are for middle and high school students, provides lesson plans that teach math and science concepts using interesting everyday life settings. The lessons are written by content experts such as scientists and engineers and are downloadable in PDF or Microsoft Word form.

Math Motivation - Real World Applications of Arithmetic - Hands on Projects – At this website there are 20 downloadable lessons (in 3 packages) that use everyday scenarios to teach math concepts. Each lesson includes an introduction and the procedure which includes instructions for implementation and related worksheets.

Next Gen Personal Finance – This resource provides a complete finance curriculum for high school students. There are units focused on banking, credit, investing, taxes, insurance, and much more. Lesson plans and materials open in Google Docs. Create a free teacher's account to access tests and assessments. Lessons also include activities, projects, case studies and more. There is even an "arcade" with games that focus on financial concepts.
